TIG Welding Techniques - Which is Better?

Walking hand-free cup vs Tig Welding Techniques explored.

Ever since I learned how to Tig weld pipe, I have heard welder arguing back and forth on the welding technique is better, run a cup? Or a free hand?

So that the welding technique is better?

For me the answer is simple. Both have their place, of course. It's Ford vs. Chevy.

You need to know how to tig weld using both techniques.

Why?

Because there are times when the cup runs better, and there are moments of free delivery is better. For pipe welding fab shop, the way cups work great and can be very quick and easy. But what about all tig welding conducted in workplaces where there are all sorts of things with you? It was then that rule this freehand technique. If you are welding pipe and can walk the cup, then just do it because there's nothing more beautiful than tig welds on pipes made by ace walker cup. But when the time comes where you need to freehand, you need to be clever that tig welding techniques as well. Walking cup works great on a pipe about 2 inches and larger, and also on some of the socket of each weld even as small as 1 inch in diameter.

However, for small diameter pipes and pipe, hands-free is the best welding technique.
Free hand tig welding are also required for welding all kinds of things other than pipes. In fact, it is used for almost anything other than welding pipes while walking the cup is not very useful for much other than welding pipes. But let's be clear about the "free delivery". This does not mean holding a torch with no support in anything. It simply means that the ceramic cup is not resting on the metal. Hand steady by resting the hand on some part of the welded metal. That's the only way that will remain good enough to make the right tig welds. Make look good tig welding means being able to maintain a tight arc. You can not do it unless your hand is steady.
